Sixth annual Beach, Boogie & BBQ Festival at the Market Common

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Sun Fun Celebration of Summer ends Labor Day weekend with the sixth annual Beach, Boogie & BBQ Festival 5:30-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, 12-9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, and 12-5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, at Grand Park at The Market Common. The festival, now extended through Sunday, will feature finger lickin’ good barbecue and food from both vendors and competitors available for purchase, along with free live entertainment featuring American Idol’s Season 2 country crooner Josh Gracin.
Gracin is a U.S. Marine and was introduced to American Idol in Season 2, as he wowed judges and viewers alike with his country twang, making his transition from reality show contestant to recording star in 2004 with his self-titled debut album and first single, “I Want to Live.” His second single, “Nothin’ to Lose,” reached the number one spot on country radio, and hits like “Stay With Me (Brass Bed),” “Unbelievable,” and “We Weren’t Crazy” have catapulted the singer to mainstream country stardom.
Organized by the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, this family-friendly festival will also feature wake board demonstrations, free boat rides, activities for children, and a celebrity meet-and-greet with the Bravo’s Top Chef: Season 4 contestant and winner Richard Blais.
A familiar face among foodies, Blais will return to Bravo’s Emmy Award Winning Top Chef series as a member of the eighth season on December 1, where he hopes to recapture the title of ‘Top Chef.’ Also in December, a sneak peek of Blais’ new show Blais Off will be premiering on the Science Channel as he takes on iconic American dishes, attempting to push the limits and technique in his own cuisine. Festival attendees will have their chance to meet Blais as well as get an autograph on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Beach, Boogie and BBQ Festival.
But pork is the main star of this MBACC annual festival as attendees are able to sample delicious barbecue from all competing teams on Saturday, Sept. 3, beginning at 12 p.m. by purchasing a $10 wristband while supplies last. Children under 10 are able sample for free, and barbecue sandwich combos and dinners will also be available for purchase.
In addition to Saturday’s barbecue fest, festival participants can buy five sampling tickets for $5 in the ‘Anything Goes’ competition entries on Friday, Sept. 2. Beer and wine will be sold all three days.
For the first`time`in Beach, Boogie and BBQ history, attendees will also be able to enjoy a wide variety of wings on Sunday, Sept. 4, as the festival is extended for a third day. Look on as hungry competitors challenge one another in a wing-eating competition or as children take on a summer’s favorite fruit in a watermelon-eating contest. A variety of great prizes await the winners, as well as free watermelon for all Sunday attendees at 2 p.m. while supplies last.
Three cooking events promise to attract the nation’s finest competitors: the ‘Anything Goes’ cooking contest and tasting on Friday, Sept. 2, and the Official S.C. Barbeque Championship and Kansas City Barbeque Society Cook-off on Saturday, Sept. 3. Each competition will award prize money to winners.
“We are excited about this year’s lineup of activities and pleased to provide a free, family-friendly event for locals and visitors to celebrate Labor Day weekend again. The chamber values its partnership with the Omar Shriners and we are thrilled to extend the festival to Sunday with new activities this year!” said Amie Lee, MBACC director of festivals and special events.

The second annual Fun in the Sun Cheer and Dance Clinic was held at the Market Common Saturday morning.
The clinic was hosted by Dolce Lusso Salon and Spa with the Carolina Panthers TopCats cheerleaders from 10 a.m. - noon. in Valor Park at the Market Common.

"When you're younger and you get to see these girls on TV, doing this with the NFL, its like the coolest thing in the world to be able to know them," said Kara Ward, the general manager of Dolce Lusso. Beware the ales of March
Beware the ales of March
By Colin Burch - For Weekly Surge
Myrtle Beach has the other March Madness: two beer-oriented festivals with plenty of brews to sample.
Irish Fest
The 2nd annual Irish Fest makes a nod toward Saint Patrick's Day, running 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday at Valor Park at The Market Common.
Never mind the free admission, kids' activities, Irish food and live music. The real deal is the selection of beers. Although subject to change, the Irish Fest beer slate lists the following:
Guinness, 4.1 percent alcohol by volume, $4
Harp, 4.3 percent ABV, $3
Smithwick's, 5 percent ABV, $3
Magners Original Irish Cider, 4.5 percent ABV, $4
Carlow Curim Golden Celtic Wheat, 4.3 percent ABV, $4
Highland Gaelic Ale, 5.8 percent ABV, $4
Bud Light, 4.2 percent ABV, $3
Harpoon Celtic, 5.4 percent ABV, price TBA
Murphy's Irish Red, 5 percent ABV, price TBA
Miller Lite, 4.2 percent ABV, $3
If you haven't tried Highland's Gaelic Ale, I strongly recommend it. As a change-up, you might consider the Magners cider.
Myrtle Beach Beer Fest
Just 13 days later, the Myrtle Beach Beer Fest makes its 3rd annual appearance at Valor Park. The Friday evening session runs 5-9 p.m. on March 25, and the fest resumes the next morning, 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
The beer list for the 3rd annual fest looks like it will hit around 100 offerings, so I asked two local beer distributers to pick some beers I should try (unlike the Irish Fest, the prices below are based on 4-ounce samples).
Mike Wildt, craft beer manager at Better Brands, Inc., in Myrtle Beach recommended:
1. Rogue Brewing Co.'s John John Dead Guy, a bourbon barrel-aged version of the company's famous Dead Guy, 6.4 percent ABV ($2 per 4-ounce sample).
2. Thomas Creek Conduplico, a Belgian-styled Imperial porter, 10 percent ABV ($2).
3. Highland Tasgall Ale, a limited-release Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy type, 8 percent ABV ($1)
Scott Green, on-premise sales manager for The Yahnis Co. of Myrtle Beach and Florence, recommended:
1. Actually, three by Seattle-based Pyramid Breweries. These will be available at the Beer Fest, and then enter the local market soon after, so the following Pyramid brews will be sneak-previews:
a. Pyramid Haywire Hefeweizen, 5.2 percent ABV ($1)
b. Pyramid Outburst Imperial IPA, 8.5 percent ABV ($1)
c. Pyramid Audacious Apricot Ale unfiltered wheat ale, 5.1 percent ABV ($1)
2. Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, 7.5 percent ABV ($1)
3. Dogfish Head Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, 9 percent ABV ($5)
Guess what? Dogfish Head only produced 1,000 cases of Bitches Brew, so that sample will be a rare treat.

Skaters try synthetic ice at Myrtle Beach rink
Myrtle Beach isn't really known for it's winter sports, but for a short`time`you can try ice skating at The Market Common.
The shopping venue boasts a synthetic ice skating rink in Valor Park. You put on real ice skates, but the ice you're skating on - isn't real. "It's a plastic polymer with a solution base on time, almost like silicone, and you put water on it and spread it on top, and you skate just like regular ice," explained David Tibbets, Perfect Parties USA.
The rink is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through January 2nd, except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The cost is $7, but a portion of that benefits the Red Cross.
If you spend $50 at the shops and restaurants at The Market Common, you can skate for free when you show your receipts.
